Familiarity with the constitutional bases of the legal system. 
Content (Syllabus outline)
Criminal law as a branch of law and science: concept and role of criminal law in modern society, sources of criminal law, basic principles of criminal law, systematics and validity of criminal law regulation, characteristics of criminal law norm. Criminal offence: concept and elements of criminal offence, reasons for criminal offence exclusion, criminal responsibility and guilt, reasons for exclusion of guilt, phases of intentional criminal offence, merger of criminal offences, participation in criminal offences, legal persons' liability for criminal offences, graded culpability. Criminal sanctions: conception, sorts and purpose of criminal sanctions, penalties, admonitory sanctions, security measures, criminal sanctions for juveniles, rehabilitation, erasure of sentence from criminal records, pardon. Civil sanctions in criminal law: forfeiture, publication of condemnation, victims' claims in adhesive procedure, legal consequences of conviction. Limitation: limitation of criminal prosecution, limitation of sentence enforcement. Special part of Penal Code: analysis of legal values and goods insured by criminal law, basic characteristics of individual sections of special part of Penal Code, phenomenology of selected criminal offences.

The objective of the course is to get students familiar with the position of criminal law within the legal system of the state, to introduce them the content and institutes of criminal law and to explain them rules for interpretation of criminal law norms.

Knowledge and understanding: Upon the completion of the course, a student will: - be familiar with the role of criminal law in modern society, - understand basic institutes of criminal law, - be able to use and interpret criminal law legislation.

Transferable/key skills and other attributes: - using accurate criminal law terminology in oral and written communication, - solving and analysing plain theoretical criminal law cases.  
Learning and teaching methods
• lectures, • seminar, • tutorial. Part of the tutorial is in a classroom while the rest is in the form of e-learning (e-tutorials may be given via video-conferencing or with the help of specially designed e-material in a virtual electronic learning environment).
