Prerequisits
Basic knowledge of mechanics, structural analysis, materials and material mechanics.
Content (Syllabus outline)
1. Basic information about bearing systems. Three dimensional, plane and linear structural systems. 2. General principles of structural design: basic requirements, ultimate and serviceability limit state design, national standards and Eurocodes. 3. Models of structural loads: classification of loads according to time of action. 4. Dead load, live load, snow load, wind load, seismic load, temperature and earth pressure using national standards and Eurocodes. 5. Superposition of actions for ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states. Safety factors.
Readings
1. Premrov M.: Analiza gradbenih obtežb (zapiski predavanj, 2003). 2. Eurocode 1: Osnove projektiranja in vplivi na konstrukcije. 3. Eurocode 8: Projektiranje konstrukcij na potresnih območjih. 4. Chen W.F.: Handbook of Structural Engineering.
Objectives and competences
The student should attain the basic principles of the safety concept and the modelling concept of structures in structural engineering considering eurocodes and national codes.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
After the final exam a student should be able to design a structure taking into account all expected loads and their combinations.
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Learning and teaching methods
Mostly with a chalk on a blackboard supported with figures and photos with Power Point programme. Continuative using of the prescribed literature with emphasis on Eurocode1 and Eurocode8 standards and national codes.
